Using categories to organize your asset inventory
Group assets and kits by type with categories, and what happens when you delete one.
What categories do
Categories group assets (and kits) by type, for example "Laptops". Each category has a name, a colour and an optional description.
Using categories
- Choose a category on the asset or kit form. It is optional.
- Filter the asset list by category to see one type of equipment.
- Link custom fields to a category so they only appear for it. See linking custom fields to categories.
- Give a semi-admin a category scope, so they only manage assets in that category. See user roles and their permissions.
Importing
The CSV import creates missing categories automatically and matches names without regard to case. See the CSV import helper.
Deleting a category
Deleting a category does not delete items. Its assets and kits become uncategorised. The confirmation warns that the action cannot be undone.
