CSV import helper

Columns, rules and common errors for importing assets into Tracero from a CSV file.

Import assets from a CSV file

Use this page to prepare a file for Assets, Import. Importing needs the Import assets feature on your plan. Download the example file from the import page first and fill it in.

Columns

  • title: required, at least 2 characters.
  • description: optional text.
  • category: created if it does not exist.
  • kit: a kit name, created if it does not exist.
  • tags: separated by commas, created if they do not exist.
  • location: must match an existing location.
  • department: must match an existing department.
  • custodian: a team member name.
  • bookable: write no to make the asset not bookable.
  • imageUrl: must start with https:// and point to an image.
  • valuation: a number.
  • purchaseDate: written as YYYY-MM-DD.
  • qrId: links an existing claimed QR code.
  • barcode_Code128, barcode_Code39, barcode_DataMatrix, barcode_ExternalQR, barcode_EAN13: barcode values, only when barcodes are enabled. See alternative barcodes.
  • cf: followed by the field name: one column for each custom field.

Rules that stop an import

  • Headers must match exactly. An unknown header stops the import with "Invalid headers in csv file."
  • A file with no data rows shows "CSV file is empty."
  • Duplicate barcodes inside the file are rejected.
  • Your plan's asset limit is checked against the whole file before anything is saved.
  • A purchase date that cannot be read is reported on its row.

If an import stops part way

Rows are created one at a time, so the rows before the error are kept. Fix the error, remove the rows already imported, and import the rest.

Update existing assets

Use Assets, Import and update with the same column layout to change assets that already exist.
